Step 1. Coach-the-coach programme
KNVB instructors visit the area for a 14-16 day period, during which they teach two basic courses comprising 10 theory and practice sessions each. Each course can accommodate 20 to 25 participants. The purpose of the course is to prepare those enrolled to work with football teams at a basic level, such as in the neighbourhood or at schools.
The local partner organization needs to select the right people for these programmes. They should have experience coaching young people, be active within football clubs, schools or the football association and should be willing to contribute to enriching young people through football. Basically, working with young people is the main requirement.
After completing the course, participants receive a Participation Certificate. At the end of the courses the KNVB instructors inform local partner organizations about the skills and opportunities of the participants.
Step 2. Identify-the-coach programme
KNVB instructors spend 14 days in the area and teach one course comprising 20 theory and practice sessions. Up to 24 participants may enrol. The purpose of the course is to prepare coaches for working with teams at an intermediate level and thus equips them for training older youth and senior teams.
Coaches from the coach-the-coach programme may be recruited for this course. Ideally, these will be the coaches with the greatest strengths and opportunities. The course is also designed for former players who once competed at a reasonably high level. Upon completing the course, participants receive a Participation Certificate and sit for an examination assessing their knowledge and skills. After the course has ended the KNVB instructors advise local partner organizations once again about the strengths and opportunities of the participants.
Step 3. Advanced level
KNVB instructors spend 20-30 days in the area and teach a single intensive course comprising theory and practice sessions, workshops and competitions. Up to 24 participants may enrol. The purpose of the course is to prepare coaches to work with teams to achieve high performance and to train youth and senior teams at the highest local level. Participants in this course may be recruited from the identify-the-coach programme. The course is also designed for former football players who once competed at the highest national level.
Steps 2 and 3 are necessary for building local capacity with respect to football technique and focus less on social development. Participants in these stages are recruited according to their football history, didactical skills and involvement in local social projects combined with football or teaching.
Step 4. Coach instructor and talent identification programme
Local coaches come to the Netherlands for 10 to 14 days to attend special Coach instructor sessions and work closely with regional KNVB coaches. The purpose of the course is to teach participants to instruct basic levels and to serve as regional coaches to assist football associations with talent identification.
Participants may be recruited from the advanced level, provided they have the skills to become instructors. In special cases candidates may receive extended training at this level to become licensed as European coaches and subsequently become professional coaches in their respective home countries.
The KNVB has built local sporting capacity in four stages by educating trainers about how to provide new trainers with basic instruction. Once the education pyramid has been completed, input from the KNVB Academy should no longer be required or should be restricted to the capacity-building process. In the long run these organizations may work with the KNVB to build the capacity of other local partner organizations. The advantage of this South-South aid is the knowledge that the partner in the South has about the local situation. In addition, such activities generate revenue for the local organizations.
